I've been chasing sounds since I was fourteen, when I started making my first recordings on a cassette deck in my bedroom. The rooms got better over the years. The obsession never changed.
Sometimes it's nice to patch in analog gear
But a great take matters more than any piece of equipment, and everything in our studios only exists to catch those moments. Don't get me wrong, I love specific examples of vintage gear for what it does, but I always prefer a raw great take full of emotion over a bad take “perfected” with autotune or a stack of twelve plugins. Those raw great takes are built on a foundation of trust between the producers, engineers, and musicians.
Abbey Road and beyond
Every studio has its personality, quirks, advantages and disadvantages. I've recorded great takes in every scenario from cheap home studios and converted hotel rooms to Abbey Road Studios in London. I've worked on records in rooms across Nashville, Los Angeles, New York, London, and Rome. I keep my certifications current in Waves, Avid, and Dante. But the part I love most hasn't changed since my first cassette deck: if an artist plays something real, our job is to make sure the recording is rolling and reflects the artist's vision.
